Castle Hill Races 2017

	CASTLE HILL POINT TO POINT and JUNIOR HANDICAP RACES Sat 7th October 2017 Results

A good turn out for both Junior and Senior races on a blustery, damp Autumn day. Again we were grateful to the Newsome Scouts for the loan of their hall, which is just alongside the start of the races. As Dave and I were setting up, I went out to see that the course was ok and came upon a very large hole in the ground that had been fenced off, right in the middle of the path the Juniors were about to take! At first we thought we would have to use the pavements to get around it but after a second 'recce' I found we could actually divert safely past the hole. This resulted in a slightly shorter course so fast times set today cannot count as records, but are recorded here as fastest this year.

The athletes started to gather from 9:30 and were warming up in preparation. The Senior race began at 10:05 am, as their race would take about 30 minutes - just enough time for the juniors to run. As in the last few years this has meant we were able to have the presentations together at the end at about 11 am.

There was lots of support again from parents and and friends and several helped as Marshalls on the course - without their help we would not be able to have the race. We marked the U13/U15s numbers with an orange cross so Officials/Marshalls could distinguish who was to do two laps. Once the Juniors were all safely back, with only about ten minutes wait, the seniors started to appear on the hill at about 10:35 with Rob well in the lead. We counted them all in safely; Elliott managed to go the wrong way again but had a good run even so! The presentations were held in the Newsome Scout Hall after. David ensured medals and trophies were ready and they were individually presented once we had worked out and confirmed the handicap results. All results are given below.

Course From Newsome Scout Hut following the paths to Hall Bower village then turn left. Around the cricket and Rugby fields, down the steep hill and through the playground. Returning past the waterworks to the finish at the Scout hut. Mixed terrain with mostly tracks and footpaths but some field. About 1 mile.

**Juniors U13/U15 race results**
Course From Newsome Scout Hut following the paths to Hall Bower village then turn left. Around the cricket and Rugby fields, down the steep hill and through the playground. Returning past the waterworks to do a second lap and then the finish at the Scout hut at the end of the second lap. Mixed terrain with mostly tracks and footpaths but some field. About 2 miles (This year part of the course had to be unexpectedly changed at the last minute due to a large hole! It removed a down and up hill between the two laps but shortened the course by only about 50m)

Seniors Race result

Course

As it is a point to point the route isn't set in stone; but competitors must ascend Castle Hill and reach Farnley Tyas returning to the finish point at Newsome Church Scout Hut
A Typical route might be: from Newsome Church (Scout Hut) following the paths to Hall Bower, through the village and up the hill to the wall at Ashes Road. Crossing the main road and up Castle Hill Side. Ascend the steps to the top and round the Castle. Back down the steps then left down Castle Hill Side/Lumb lane to the farm and Public footpath sign. Along the public paths across fields to the Honley Road heading to Farnley Tyas. Up to Farnley Tyas Church then returning back along the road/the public paths across fields to the Finish at the Scout hut. 4.5 miles approximately - starters are handicapped based on recent performances to give everyone a chance
